There’s so much to love about this recent session in Wexford. The colors, the season, and the love for this little guy who just turned one. We visited a local orchard and let this little fella explore. And if he could talk in complete sentences, I think he’d say that life is good!
It’s funny how sharing new work is the last thing on my list when I’m busy. But I’ve been blessed with a busy spring and summer and after sharing the joys of photographing a lovely wedding last month, I’d like to share one of my favorite things to photograph. This family portrait session marks the first birthday of this proud mom and dad. I love how in just an hour of photographing this family on a bright and early morning, there is a sweet narrative of interactions between these parents and their daughter.

One-year olds are so much fun to capture and I’ve found that it’s best to come to a first birthday session with an expectation for play, a lot of exercise (whether they’re crawling or walking), and a willingness to be silly. Although, I am careful to judge whether or when I can be silly because it’s natural for one-year olds to be wary of strangers.
These photos are posted from the end of the session to the beginning. As you’ll see later, we started with some simple portraits at a nearby park. But it’s really when we got back to their house that this little guy warmed up and was ready to play.
This little fella is super cute, but I love how this mama’s face lights up as she looks into her son’s eyes.
And dads sure do know how to bring out the sillies.
I brought this tiny chair, which slowed this guy down just long enough to capture him sitting on it before he popped up and walked away!
And while I’m all about capturing emotion and relationships, I know how important it is to capture a family portrait too!

When we first talked about what this mom had in mind for her family portraits, she mentioned almost apologetically, that they’d like to keep their look casual to reflect how they dress on a regular basis. And I said, “of course, please do!” because that is one of the things I love about being a lifestyle photographer—there’s no need to be anything but yourself, no pressure, no pretense.
While this family chose to represent their day-to-day look, they carefully chose their wardrobe with complimenting shades and a fun dress to highlight their daughter who just celebrated her first birthday.
We met at one of my favorite spots by the lake at North Park. It’s a great location for families with little ones, because there’s a decent variety of scenery within a short distance.
No family portrait session with little ones is complete without dad tossing a kiddo in the air!
Lately, I’ve had some wonderful luck with a dog walking behind me at just the right time. This was one of those times!
Yay! This big girl even clapped on que. I think she enjoyed her first birthday photo shoot.

This family’s baby girl just turned one and so the time was right for an updated family portrait! We headed to the city for a change of pace and found some unexpected fun, like fountains and gardens, the train station, and an excellent opportunity to encourage these sweet kiddos with a treat of ice cream after the session was over: Millie’s Market Square Scoop Shop The next time I’m downtown, I want to check this place out, it was hopin’!
Anyway, we had lovely sceenery, happy children and fun times!
Part of the fun of downtown sessions is walking between locations. And I can’t get enough of seeing families walking together hand-in-hand.
Or silly moments! While this sweet girl is all giggles, big brother is busy styling dad’s hair!
When you’re one, it’s exciting to sit in a big chair, and mama is close-by to supervise!
Here’s a close-up of the birthday girl – look at those eyes!
Big brother was excited to go to the train station. And to be sure that he felt special too, we stopped to get some portraits of just him with mom and dad too!
If you’d like to schedule a session in the big city, I’d love to talk with you! Please use this form to get in touch, thanks!
