Not sure if you should update your headshot or family portrait?  Here are a few indicator’s that it’s time: new hair, new glasses or switching to contacts, weight lose or gain!  Basically, does your last portrait look like you do now?  And if it’s your family, I recommend being photographed every year or at the least, every few years, because kids change fast.

I recently changed my hair, glasses and gained a few pounds.  Now, I know most people would say, wouldn’t you want to wait until you loose those pounds?!?  As a photographer, I know I can still make a flattering portrait even with a couple of extra pounds, and I’m not sure when or if I’ll loose the weight, so I absolutely discourage waiting!  Some families have only photos of the children because the parents want to avoid being photographed.  But I feel that family portraits are just as important as updating portraits of the kids.

Anyway, here are some self portraits with natural light and studio strobes.  And I really like the look of both!

First we’ll start with the natural light shots:

My studio has beautiful natural light and I’m loving shooting all kinds of sessions in it.  But I’ve also been enjoying adding studio strobes and mixing light or straight studio lighting like the images below:

I’m so glad to have a studio.  Having this space allows me to offer sessions year-round.  And what’s best, I’m not at the mercy of the weather forecast like I was before! I believe families who have been previously photographed on-location are seeing the value of studio sessions as well.  There is peace of mind in not having to watch the weather leading up to your session. Plus, the ability to control the light in a studio increases the consistency and quality of your photographs.  I’ll still be spending most of my time photographing families outdoors come fall, but having a back-up plan is such a relief!
