I’ve been fortunate to photograph many newborns and their doting parents over the years. And I’ve found that no newborn session is the same. Each new baby is remarkable and each parent was created to nurture, protect, and provide for their child. It is a beautiful relationship and I feel so honored to document that.
At this family’s newborn portrait session, we stepped outside into the chilly fall air to take some portraits on the deck. Mom and dad were cuddling the baby. The little one snuggled into her daddy in the sweetest way and created a moment filled with the love and closeness of a new family. These are the moments I love to capture – natural, sweet, and filled with love.
As a photographer, sweet moments like these often remind me of my own family. While snapping photos of this beautiful new baby and her parents, the family dog looked at me so intently and sweetly that I couldn’t resist taking a few frames that included their four-legged family member. In one image the dog is pouting on the bed and it reminded me of when my husband and I brought our oldest son home to meet our dachshund. And again, when we brought our youngest home to meet his big brother. I just remember that look from our family pup that said, “Hey, I love you. I’m here, too.” For this reason, I always make sure I give siblings (and sometimes pets!) a chance to shine and feel special during newborn shoots.
With my full-service sessions, one of the hidden benefits that is especially valuable for newborn sessions is retouching. Your session comes with a product credit and any image you choose to print or include in an album is retouched. It’s normal for newborns to have blotchy or flaky skin that changes from day-to-day and it’s totally normal for new parents to worry about it when they have a newborn photography session booked. I love being able to provide parents with the peace of mind in knowing they don’t have to worry about their baby’s skin, but that their prints or album images will reflect what their baby looks like without the skin issues they’re experiencing on that particular day. When I retouch, I am very careful to keep it natural. The original image of the beautiful baby from this shoot is below alongside a naturally retouched version on the right.
After a session, I’m always excited to do a photo reveal (online or in-person). I never get tired of watching new parents see their photos for the first time. Also, with any professional print or photographic product purchased, I include the corresponding retouched archival file/s on a custom app that you can save to your phone. Your photos are always at your fingertips. The archival files are also downloadable so that you can back them up for safe-keeping.
