Pittsburgh Newborn Photography: Natural Light at Home

Capturing this sweet, growing family at a newborn session during the holidays this past year was truly a gift.

The new parents chose their stylish home as the location for their newborn session, an ideal setting for the comfort and ease of the new baby and parents. Mom and Dad shared that they also had their engagement photos taken at home and hope to plan future sessions there to capture their family in the years to come. There are many inspiring locations for photoshoots (a few of my favorite locations can be found here), but it’s always a delight to photograph a new family in their own home. The memories created there are unlike any others and I love being a part of that.

This family’s home had an abundance of natural light in the foyer and nursery, making it the perfect setting for shots of the little one. I was able to supplement the light in areas of the house that needed a little extra help to ensure that this trio looked as fresh and charming in their artwork as they do in real life. And different approaches to lighting worked well for some of the more intimate black and white photos of Mom and Dad holding their new baby between them.  I love shooting silhouettes when capturing profiles and letting the background go bright for capturing detail on their faces. Drawing upon different lighting techniques also highlighted subtle facial expressions on the new parents’ faces, bringing genuine emotion, connection, and love to each shot.

Following the newborn session with this gorgeous family, I met with them over Zoom for a photo reveal, helping Mom and Dad to select images to use for the birth announcement, family album, and to put on display in their home.

I couldn’t help but be reminded of the excitement and wonder that new parents feel when seeing their baby for the first time. Capturing that pure love in the best light is what it’s all about.
