First-Year Portrait Session: Hartwood Acres Mansion

This first-year portrait session at Hartwood Acres Mansion took place just two weeks ago and was such a bright spot in my day. This little guy really warmed up as the session went on. He especially loved this tiny chair that is usually just right for one-year-olds.

His mom and dad wanted to bring along their dog and I’m glad they did. This little boy and his dog are so precious together and many smiles were shared between them. Sometimes I recommend bringing along another person to help with a dog when he or she is not being photographed, but this family was confident their dog would be a good girl and she was!

Dad suggested we sit his son by a cluster of tiny flowers that he took interest in and many sweet moments came from that spot. He ended up playing with the pebbles and his hands got a bit messy. It reminded me of the nursery rhyme that goes, “snips and snails, and puppy dogs’ tails; that’s what little boys are made of.”

Scheduling an 8 a.m. session worked out well for this family. We started in the open shade and as the sun continued to rise, I suggested locations where the sunlight would shine mostly on their backs. And as it got warmer out, this mama wanted some photos of her son in just his pants and suspenders with bare feet. What a fun way to end this session!
