McConnells Mill Engagement Session: Choosing a Location to Match Your Style

Earlier this month, I enjoyed getting in a quick trip to McConnells Mill State Park for an engagement session. I have loved coming to this park since I was a child, but when my clients choose it as their location, I do a little happy dance. I feel so blessed to be only a 30-minute drive from this lovely park. Now as I was getting to know this couple over the course of a phone call and a few emails. I offered some options for locations ranging from a park with a mansion to a main street in quaint town nearby. And with this couple’s plans to wed in a beautiful log cabin lodge in the fall of next year, McConnells Mill fit their style best.

One of the great things about coming to McConnells Mill in December is that there is no shortage of color with the evergreen trees and mossy boulders. Meanwhile all of my other favorite spots are grey and brown unless it happens to snow.

This calls for a straight-up portrait. In my experience with photographing weddings, the parents always appreciate a traditional portrait like this.

And modern brides and grooms usually prefer something like this:

One of the fun things about photographing sessions at this park is the getting to walk on this lovely trail through the woods.

And these next few images just feature more of the loveliness of this engagement session.

I really love this last shot of them laughing amidst the evergreens. It really sums this session up.

Downtown Pittsburgh Engagement Session

How sweet is it that I was contacted by Joe a few months ago about scheduling this engagement session? He was planning his marriage proposal to Kelly for the Steelers game on Christmas was really pulling out all of the stops for their get-away to Pittsburgh.

We met at the Fairmont, where they stayed. The lobby is a stunning setting, with lots of natural light and open spaces. And these two made it feel warm and cozy as they cuddled up to one another.

Joe wanted to stop at Heinz Field to capture the place where he proposed.

And we also looped around the North Shore right before the sun started to set.

Look at this ring—good job, Joe!

And we finished our session in the exact spot where he proposed, just outside the stadium.

Congrats, Joe and Kelly, on your engagement! Many blessings to you!

Pittsburgh Engagement Session

I’ll be photographing Taylor and Brandt’s wedding in 2017 for George Street Photography. We got to meet for the first time at their engagement session in Oakland—Panther Hollow, to be exact. It was great getting to know them and their doggie, Zeus, who sometimes stole the show. You’ll see what I mean in a bit.

I’ve never really spent any time under this bridge before, but it is a nice location for sure!

This next shot at Schenley Park is one of my favs of them. They’re having a good time and it’s contagious!

Ok, here’s where Zeus starts to ham it up. While this shot was planned, there were several unplanned shots of him getting in between his parents. It was very funny, but Taylor and Brandt were smart to bring along friends to help with entertaining Zeus while he wasn’t being photographed. Otherwise, I think Zeus would have been photobombing the whole session!

Taylor has been busy on Pinterest and this is our take on one of her pins. Now who’s pinning who?

And she even brought this cute sign for Zeus to wear. And he wore it like a champ!

She said yes!

What a fun session! Thanks Taylor and Brandt—looking forward to your wedding next year!
