Pittsburgh Newborn: Photographing Siblings and Baby

One of the toughest photo requests I get during newborn sessions, and one that I deeply understand the motivation for, is a shot with the baby and sibling/s—especially when there’s uncertainty about being able to hold the baby safely. There are lots of different approaches for this like propping them up between pillows on a couch or bed, or laying them side-by-side on the floor. But my favorite find during this recent session is when there are older siblings who can confidently hold the baby, to let the siblings interact and not really pose them at all.

Aren’t these children adorable with their matching blonde hair?! And then their dog even sat in for a portrait! Impressive!

When you have a larger family, I feel like a lifestyle session is really the best way to go. There is so much to photograph so why not capture the whole family in a free and lighthearted way?

I love using shallow depth of field to lead viewers to the main focal point, but with just enough detail out of focus to tell the story. It’s important for me to have everyone comfortable and feel part of the shoot before we break away to focus on just baby and parents.

And this little sweetie pie, stayed awake for the whole session and was so pleasant!

The kids were so great for this session, but they were naturally getting a bit restless, and we had one more family portrait in mind. And I love the result. Dads have a knack for embracing the chaos and this shot makes me smile to see big brother upside down. We have a photo like that too, when my second son was born. Maybe that’s why I like this one so much? Even though my oldest wasn’t into begin photographed that morning, I’m so glad our photographer captured our chaos.

And this last shot is a happy conclusion to this in-home newborn session. What a sweet and blessed family!

South Park Newborn Session

This newborn session was given as a shower gift by the mama’s cousin. What a thoughtful gift for an expecting mom?! And her baby girl was so very cooperative, that is was really a gift for all involved! She was completely content to curl up in her crib and did not fuss at the crocheted crown.

It’s completely natural for babies to fuss and I come expecting it, but this session was an absolute breeze.

I really love it when babies look up at their parents.

This session was just a few weeks before Christmas, so we did a few family portraits in front of the Christmas tree. It looks like someone’s getting sleepy!

Now she’s all ready for her nap! Good job, mom, dad, and baby girl! Congratulations on your little blessing!

Downtown Pittsburgh Engagement Session

How sweet is it that I was contacted by Joe a few months ago about scheduling this engagement session? He was planning his marriage proposal to Kelly for the Steelers game on Christmas was really pulling out all of the stops for their get-away to Pittsburgh.

We met at the Fairmont, where they stayed. The lobby is a stunning setting, with lots of natural light and open spaces. And these two made it feel warm and cozy as they cuddled up to one another.

Joe wanted to stop at Heinz Field to capture the place where he proposed.

And we also looped around the North Shore right before the sun started to set.

Look at this ring—good job, Joe!

And we finished our session in the exact spot where he proposed, just outside the stadium.

Congrats, Joe and Kelly, on your engagement! Many blessings to you!

Pittsburgh Engagement Session

I’ll be photographing Taylor and Brandt’s wedding in 2017 for George Street Photography. We got to meet for the first time at their engagement session in Oakland—Panther Hollow, to be exact. It was great getting to know them and their doggie, Zeus, who sometimes stole the show. You’ll see what I mean in a bit.

I’ve never really spent any time under this bridge before, but it is a nice location for sure!

This next shot at Schenley Park is one of my favs of them. They’re having a good time and it’s contagious!

Ok, here’s where Zeus starts to ham it up. While this shot was planned, there were several unplanned shots of him getting in between his parents. It was very funny, but Taylor and Brandt were smart to bring along friends to help with entertaining Zeus while he wasn’t being photographed. Otherwise, I think Zeus would have been photobombing the whole session!

Taylor has been busy on Pinterest and this is our take on one of her pins. Now who’s pinning who?

And she even brought this cute sign for Zeus to wear. And he wore it like a champ!

She said yes!

What a fun session! Thanks Taylor and Brandt—looking forward to your wedding next year!
