Pittsburgh Family Portraits: Riverview Park

Family portraits with kiddos this little keep me on my toes. They actually used to intimidate me before having my sons who have trained me well in the four years since I became a mom. However, I still feel that before every session with young children, I need to manage expectations, mine included as I know how it feels as a mom to want just one perfect photo of my boys at their best behavior in adorable clothing, with no distractions in the background and good lighting. Actually, I’m not sure most moms have put this desire into words, and even more unlikely those words, but I feel they want something along those lines.

Before becoming a mom, I would have disregarded this photo below. But now I know better to appreciate it. Isn’t this the way it goes sometimes? Wardrobe is carefully planned. Everyone is looking great and there’s just this one thing that isn’t working for this family – this little guy hates laying in the grass. Mom and daughter look great and Dad is trying his best to comfort his son, but it’s just not happening. But fussy baby boy and all, aren’t they a sweet family? And this moment is one that should make them smile someday—remembering what they did in pursuit of the perfect photo. It’s real life and this image was a part of the set in their gallery. We never did get all four of them to smile, or just look at the camera, while they were laying in the grass in this beautiful lighting, but how could I not share this sweetness?

There’s something I love about photographing one-year olds. I love how they can look into the camera with no inhibition and really just study it with no pretense for smiles. I have some portraits like this of my sons and they’re still some of my favorites to this day.

And then they get bigger and learn how to turn on the charm for the camera (when they’re in the mood to comply, that is!) and that is just downright charming.

big sister

For little guys like this one, a ride on daddy’s shoulders is a sure-fire way to get some good father and son portraits.

And this little sweetheart just did something funny that made her mama laugh and this was the embrace in the moments that followed.

mother and daughter

We did get a couple of family portraits where everyone is looking at the camera and content to be photographed. And that’s a reasonable expectation when it comes to family portraits with little ones. The expectation of getting all smiles is sometimes a tall order, depending on the age and particular mood of the kids in that moment. I do share some things I’ve learned about trying to cultivate a positive environment for photo shoots on my Getting Ready page and it’s definitely worth checking out before your session. I’ll continue to add what I’m learning along the way because I want sessions to go well and understand all of the pressure that comes with getting ready for a photo shoot.

And here’s the moment where this little brother and big sister simultaneously shared in big smiles—as they were looking through this park bench! I’ll take it!

Pittsburgh Weddings: Sheraton at Station Square

I thought after having babies that I would never want to shoot weddings again. I even sold a bit of lighting equipment and my spare camera body (not a wise thing to do just a few months after having a baby). My world changed so much that I had some serious tunnel vision and I thought I’d just shift into photographing babies and kids, which I love! But I have to admit after starting up again last year, it is still so much fun photographing weddings so I’m glad to get back into it even if it’s only part-time for the moment.

Who wouldn’t want to get to witness the moment a bride puts on her gown and her mom and bridesmaids swoon?

all ready!

And look at this loveliness? Weddings are full of so much opportunity for a portrait photographer.

I think I mentioned that this is a part-time gig for now, so know that this is not a great overview of the day, just some hand-picked favorites!

If you’re from Pittsburgh, you know that last shot was from the Point. I also love walking along the paths that wind through the trees by the Allegheny River.

And I can’t get enough walking shots. Everyone should do these. It should be the next selfie, although not by yourself, that would be awkward.

And here’s one last fav in this quick recap. Congrats to the new Mr. and Mrs.!

Studio Christmas Portraits

I adore photographing this family and have enjoyed seeing their baby boy grow over this last year. He’s getting a little tougher to capture as he’s on the move now, but I think we found some sweet shots of him in their Christmas session.

This is the first blog post I’ve shared from this family, so I’ll be going backwards this winter to catch up on some blogging, but for now, tis the season for sharing Christmas photos!

One of my tricks for active little guys and girls is to put them in a big chair that’s not too high off of the ground. This cutie pie was more adventurous than I thought, so we had to have mom and dad just off camera to be there to grab him when he got too close to the edge of the chair.

And here’s the whole family. Aren’t they sweet?

And this last shot is just a glimpse of him crawling out of the photo. Photographing a crawling baby or toddler is like an aerobic work-out for all involved. It gets easier when little ones can start to understand more and you can use motivators like candy! I’m not ashamed to say that I have candy on hand anytime I’m photographing my own boys! But I completely get it when a parent wants to wait until after their child’s first birthday to introduce sweets. I did that with my first son (my second got lucky that I caved in on that stance the second time around – his first lolipop was in our Christmas photos when he was 9 months old and it worked like a charm!)

It can be challenging with a little one on the move, but what a precious time to capture that developing personality. And his mama cares very much about capturing all of these special memories! Many wishes for a blessed holiday!

Three Generations Family Portrait

A good friend of mine wanted to plan a photoshoot as a gift for her mom’s birthday. We had a beautiful fall day and four little ones ages 2 and under. This sweet family has really grown in the last few years!

We met in her parent’s backyard in Beaver County and stood in the shade of the setting sun.

Before the shoot we talked about the groupings of portraits for the whole family, individual families and some candids of the kids, because while it would be great to capture everyone smiling at the same time, it was not likely with a group this big and children so small.

I know the stress of wanting to get your children to smile for their photos. And I feel it keenly because my sons are some tough subjects to photograph being that they’re little boys who are constantly on the move.

This photoshoot didn’t produce that one shot with everyone smiling, but there are a few where everyone is looking at the camera. We’re documenting that day with the kids at those given ages and as moms and dads, we can recall when our child bumped his head fifteen minutes before the shoot or how our toddler would not budge on smiling for the camera. I remember my parents and grandparents reminiscing over the challenges of photographing me and my sister and cousins when we were little. It sweetens the memory and we have a lot more to talk about than perfect smiles on cue.

Aren’t these two above adorable? They were playing with sticks and I just really liked this moment as they were looking off to the side at their parents.

Such a sweet mama and baby!

For parents wanting to know how to coax some smiles out of their kids, I suggest three things: limiting the chaos behind the camera (for anyone not being photographed in the current shot, it’s best to be out of sight and not calling for the kids to smile – only one designated person should do that—which brings me to my next suggestion), having one dedicated person located at the side of your photographer to make funny faces and encourage the kids (although not necessary, your photographer can do this on his/her own as well), and lastly treats! I use candy with my kids. I figure that a photo shoot is an important enough event that having a little positive reinforcement to get my kids to cooperate is never bad. I even give them candy throughout the shoot. I don’t mind seeing my boys’ with lollipops in their photos. When my second son was born, I gave my oldest Smarties to chew on while our photographer did our newborn/family photos. You couldn’t see the Smarties, but you could see his smile! And that’s saying something even just a week after the huge adjustment of becoming a big brother! He’s probably smiling mostly because he was happily crunching on candy and I was happy to give him that reward for his cooperation.

Lifestyle Newborn Session: Baby Wesley

Meet Baby Wesley, also known as their little Smurf by his adoring mom and dad. I had the pleasure of photographing their maternity session too. I just loved photographing Megan and Rick on their farm and their newborn session with Wesley was no different. We even got outside for a few family portraits with his extended family! But my favorite images from this session are by far the lifestyle images that mostly took place on the bed in their bedroom. I’ll get to those in a bit, but for now, meet this precious little guy!

newborn close-up

We started out focusing on Wesley with a few accessories and some minimal props and we found out that Wesley preferred his mama and dada’s arms. So we took breaks so that they could soothe him in order to get some of the essential shots we were after. This one below is one of Rick soothing Wesley to sleep and it happens to be a favorite.

And once he was out, he slept quite peacefully, so much so that we could even place him in this vintage bath basin from Megan’s family.

And here’s where I started to fall in love with this session – Megan swaddled Wesley and sat on the edge of her bed in the soft natural light.

Then Rick joined her and they scooted back toward the headboard where the window light was glowing.

And here’s my all-time favorite of the three of them. They actually chose this for a framed print and I’m so excited to put it together.

And here’s a sweet pose that I don’t often think of, but Megan suggested it and I’m so glad she did!

Congratulations, Megan and Rick! Wesley is precious and it’s such an honor to photograph your family! Blessings to you!
