Now that it’s finally feeling like fall in Pittsburgh, this July family session feels so far away. It was a very warm day and this family was celebrating their daughter’s first birthday. We headed to Hartwood Acres Mansion for the lovely garden and just look at this little peanut!
Here’s the whole family in the garden.
Sometimes it’s tricky getting kiddos to stay in one place, so we played a game with this cutie pie. He was hiding my toy dog to see if we could find it. There’s just something about sneaky little boys! I have two of them at home and I just love seeing them delight in trying to trick me!
This mansion is such a lovely setting from any angle, but this courtyard at the back of the mansion happens to be my favorite.
We stopped for some mother/daughter and father/son portraits too. It’s just so special seeing the relationships they have.
And here’s one last image from the session that I’ve made a habit to photograph in all of my sessions. These are the two who started it all!
It’s a blessing to photograph family portraits. If you, or someone you know is looking for a photographer, I’d love to hear from you! Get in touch by clicking here.

Hartwood Acres is a favorite location and a popular one when the garden is in full bloom. It’s not hard to see why, what a lovely setting for a family portrait in July! I’ll start with a favorite shot of these sisters—their mama challenged them to a staring contest and the giggles were just about to bust out!
The mansion at Hartwood Acres offers so many lovely angles and opportunities for standing or seated portraits like this one.
This family brought their own blanket and I love how it naturally brings them close without any posing required.
This is another favorite of the two sisters.
We also did some individual portraits of the girls.
Moments before this portrait, this dad almost caught a butterfly! It keeps photo shoots fun when families can be playful like that!
And one thing all moms and dads should do is be photographed together without the kids, because they were husband and wife before they were parents!

Katherine and Robert were high school sweethearts who went their separate ways after high school and fatefully bumped into each other at a grocery store years later. As her mom put it during a toast, there was something different when they got back together. There was no doubt they were meant to be together. And they made it official last Saturday at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.
Katherine had her hair done at Studio Booth, a posh salon in East Liberty, and finished getting ready on site at the venue.
